Introduction
The Competency Recovery Program is part of VLACS' Personalized Pathways (P2) Program. Funded by the New Hampshire Department of Education and in collaboration with New Hampshire school districts, the Competency Recovery Program is designed to reduce the drop-out rate by providing students with the opportunity to take modules within online courses in order to meet competency requirements. For example, rather than waiting for a summer school session to "re-do" a competency, a student could opt to register for online course modules at any time.
Personalized Pathways Competency Recovery Process
1. The local school official determines that competency recovery is required and identifies specific competency that has not been met by the student.
2. The local school official uses the P2 competency search page to determine which course modules will satisfy missed competencies.
3. The local school official informs students about VLACS and the Competency Recovery Program.
4. The student and parent/guardian register for the appropriate VLACS course(s).
5. The VLACS instructor schedules a welcome call with the student and parent/guardian.
6. Students begin work in course modules.
7. The local school provides support to students which includes access to school based technology, counseling, and other appropriate academic support.
8. Transcripts of completed work will be availble to students and local school officials. Local schools can have direct access to student progress through the VLACS student information system, if they are a partner school.
9. VLACS transcripts are used by the local school as a record that students have met the identified competencies.
Personalized Pathways Competency Search Page
Students and local school guidance counselors should use the search page to determine which competencies and course modules will fulfill the local school's competency requirements. It is important that the student has a copy of the VLACS competency available during the welcome call with the VLACS instructor. There is a print icon on the search page that will create a copy of the competency and related information for the student's use. This print out is referred to as the "Competency Confirmation Page" by VLACS instructors.

How to Register for Competency Recovery Modules
1. Go to our admissions page, read through the eligibility criteria and select the appropriate link to begin registering for courses. Click here to access our admissions page.
2. Once you have created an account within our student information system (Virtual School Administrator), select a competency recovery course. For example: If you need to complete a competency associated with English I, then look for the course called VLACS- Comp English I. Please note that VLACS - English I is the same course as VLACS - Comp English I, but it is intended for students who want to take the entire course for credit.
3. Prior to starting the course, your instructor will contact you and your parents/guardians in order to schedule a welcome call. During this phone call the instructor will review the requirements of the course and answer any questions you may have. Students should have a copy of the Competency Confirmation Page at this time of this call as the VLACS instructor will request that the student identify the competency and module(s) that she/he needs to complete. At the end of the welcome call the instructor will activate the course.
