Comments about VLACS

Selected Quotes from Parents:

My daughter has been very ill for years. Without VLACS on-line courses which allow her to work at her own pace,
continuing her high school education would be impossible.

The opportunity to take things that one can't take at the local high school, and to work at one's own pace.

I no longer have to create a curriculum for our homeschooling. I know what they are learning is in line with
standards. When they graduate they will have an actual diploma, no GED required.

Eliminates need to sit in classroom for 130 hours to get credit. Credit based on demonstrated learning, not
time spent in class.

My son is in a music-intensive program in H.S. for a music ed. major in college, so his day is VERY full. VLACS lets
him take less critical courses (sciences) so he can concentrate on music at school. His school also hasn't been able
to provide physics at a time when he could take it, but he needs it to graduate, so VLACs is a life saver!

The freedom to work when my child has available time, and work at his own speed.

The school district was very supportive about VLACS, and in fact they were the ones who suggested VLACS
to us. Also, our daughter's instructor worked with us to help us get her through the end of the course when
she was running out of steam. The instructor had great suggestions about which sections my daughter might
be able to skip and still do well in the course. I incredibly appreciate how supportive the teacher was!!!

As an educated parent, I feel VLACS has been a wonderful tool for teaching my child exactly how to do
independent learning. The experience of time management, meeting deadlines, overall discipline involved is
a unique one with on-line learning. I feel the courses through VLACS have helped to prepare my child for post
high school learning in a very effective way. I will encourage my other children to enroll in at least one VLACS course!

The one on one learning and the communication with parents. This creates a circle of support that lends itself to
the success of the student.

The ability to complete course work outside of school hours and at your own accelerated pace is very convenient
and helpful, especially when trying to complete classes that would not otherwise fit in the traditional schedule or time frame

It allows my child to have an alternative schooling experience from traditional school for parents who cannot homeschool
full time. It is through the state, which provides teachers, so again this is an excellent alternative. The programs, especially
the new Physical Science program has been updated and provides great technology to help the child visualize what she is
learning. I talk to the teachers more than in traditional schooling, and I can see my childs progress whenever I want. So far,
it has been great. Thanks.

I can't say enough good things about VLACS and all the teachers, and yourself, for working and sticking with us during this
turbulent time in our lives. If it wasn't for VLACS, would probably be a high school drop out.

Selected Quotes from Students

The teachers are helpful when you need questions answered about assignments, oral assessments, or when they will be on
pronto so you can get help for assignments.

Being able to complete work on my own time, at my own pace and anywhere in the world. I travel for my career, so it's
much easier for me! And I love the teachers and students. They're all so committed to school, just like me.

You can complete a course and use it to accelerate your student career. I also like how you can choose your pace.
The teachers are very nice, and explain any questions you may have in a way that you can comprehend. VLACS has helped me a lot.

Being able to do classes I would not other wise be able to take

It seems that VLACS combines the best in public school and homeschooling. If you have a problem you can email a teacher.
And you are working by yourself so you aren't given "busy work" while you wait on everyone else.

It gives me the flexibility I need with the baby and work.

It taught me to be much more self disciplined and that if I don't do it no one will do it for me.

How caring my teacher is with all of my questions and comments. She always helped me and responded very quickly
when ever I had a problem.

The best thing about VLACS was that I am still able to be at my regular grade without staying back and still keeping up
with my credits online by taking this course.

VLACS offers courses that my school doesn't offer, and I would have probably had to pay a lot of money to take somewhere else.

Where do our students live?

As a public school/charter school, all New Hampshire resident students under twenty-one years of age may attend VLACS
tuition free, and, as you would expect, the majority of our students are from New Hampshire.  Out-of-state students pay
tuition to attend VLACS and we are very pleased to enroll students from the following states:  Maine, Massachusetts,
New York, and Vermont.

Funding

Virtual School Funding: ·A National Perspective

Policy
"Funding and Policy Frameworks for Online Learning" was published by the The International Association for K12 Online
Learning (iNACOL) to help policymakers understand the unique requirements associated with virtual learning.  A copy of
the report can be accessed  here. A comparison of the report's findings and the state's support for VLACS can be found here .
Cost
Emerging data suggests that the average annual cost for a full-time virtual student is approximately $6,500.
The text of Susan Patrick's letter to the Georgia Charter School Commission regarding this topic can be found  here .

Virtual School Funding in New Hampshire

The Virtual Learning Academy receives state-funded tuition through New Hampshire's Education Trust Fund, which

exists to benefit New Hampshire public schools. Local schools are funded by the same fund plus local property taxes.

The Academy's tuition aid is based upon NH state law RSA 194-B:11. Currently, all charter schools, including VLACS,

receive $5,450 for each full-time student. The cost for part-time students will be pro-rated based upon the full-time

student tuition.·For example, the funding calculation for students taking a one half-credit course is as follows:

$5,450 full-time aid divided by 12 half-credit courses per year = $454.17 per half-credit course.
